While trees are a great addition to properties, sometimes it is necessary to remove them. A tree surgeon can carry out this job, as well as other tasks such as planting, maintenance and hazard assessments. It is important to get a professional tree surgeon to remove a tree as the roots of a tree spread very wide. A tree surgeon will know the proper techniques to cut down the tree, remove the stump and the root system effectively.
Here is how professionals remove tree stumps.
Once a tree has been cut down, a professional will get to work on removing the tree stump, which is not an easy task. The first step is to ensure you cut off as much of the top of the stump as possible, aiming for it to be as close to the ground as possible before you start working to remove the stump.
Next holes are drilled into the stump using a spade bit. These holes should be evenly spaced out and roughly every 6 to 8 inches around the perimeter of the stump. They need to be about 12 inches deep into the stump. You should then drill holes at 45-degree angles to connect the first holes together.
Most stump removal is done with tree stump removal chemicals. Pour the chemicals into the holes in granular form, then fill the holes with water for the chemical to soak in. Tree stump removal isn't a quick fix with this method, as you now need to leave the chemicals for around 4-6 weeks. During this time the stump should become soft and spongy.
From here it’s now time to try removing the stump. Stumps can be very difficult to remove manually so many tree surgeons utilise stump grinding machines. These machines are used to grind stumps down to a fine wood chip which can then be easily disposed of. Because the stump is now soft, the grinder should easily be able to slice through it and clear as much of it as possible.
You then need to get rid of the tree roots. You can burn these out by pouring kerosene or fuel oil into the holes, waiting a few weeks for it to fully penetrate the wood then dropping a match into the holes. This will then burn for a few days as the roots die. You should take caution when doing this, as it is dangerous to have a smouldering ember in your garden. It is essential you keep an eye on it and have a water supply nearby.
