Sports facilities at schools need to be carefully maintained. Even a one-form entry school could have hundreds of children per week doing PE, which equals a lot of footfall. You want to ensure that your facilities such as fields, astroturf, gymnasiums and others are kept at their best.
If sports facilities are not maintained properly, this could potentially lead to injury or damage to the environment. Here are some tips on keeping sports facilities maintained, specifically fields.
Mowing is incredibly important for any outside space, but especially a field which will have sports occurring on it. Grass for a sports pitch should usually be mown to a height of 1-2 inches during the warm seasons and 2-3 inches when it is colder.
Make sure you mow the field more in the summer when grass grows quickly and try not to rake the grass off the field after mowing, as this can damage your field. You can also fertilise the field to help it grow, but beware of unnecessary weeds growing due to the fertiliser.
An easy way to damage a field is to use it in unsuitable weather conditions. If it has been raining, the field will be in a bad condition, full of mud and waterlogged sections. At these times it is best to leave the pitch to go back to use it, as doing PE on this pitch in this condition could damage it permanently. Try to schedule activities inside when you know it will rain.
Weeds are an inconvenience wherever they grow, but you especially don’t want them growing on your field! They can ruin both the aesthetic of the field but also be a hindrance to those playing on the field. Try to take care of the weeds without using too many herbicides, as these can damage your field. An expert in weeding should be able to help you decide on the right levels of chemicals to use.
