Tips to Prepare Your Property for Building

GMCB Ltd • 17 February 2022

Once you’ve purchased land to build on, you’ve only just begun. The next step is to ensure the property is ready to build on. If you’re not sure where to start to prepping the site, the following tips will help.

Choose the Right Space to Clear

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding where to build on your property. One of the first things you should look at is the scale of the slope. Choose a space that is flat enough to work for your home, but also has easy access.

Remove Excess Trees

If your land has trees where you intend to build, those will need to be taken down and the stumps removed. The best way to do this is to bring in a land clearing service. They have the right experience and equipment to make fast work of trimming and bringing down the trees in a precise manner. This is an especially helpful skill when there are other buildings close by and you need to prevent the trees from damaging other structures. Companies that specialize in clearing land are also able to remove the logs or turn them into mulch which can be spread back across your land.

Vegetation Removal

After the larger trees are removed, you will want to remove all of the underbrush. Depending on the property, this could be just a few shrubs here and there, or it could be a thicket that covers the entire property. Clearing the grounds can be incredibly time-consuming to do it properly. If you are in a hurry to get the property cleared and ready for building, you may want to consider hiring a land clearing company to also take this part of the project on. It can be quite cost-effective in the time saved by professionals doing the work.

Filling Low Areas

You may have some dips and lower areas on your property where you would like to build. These areas will need to be filled in. When filling the areas in, it’s important to ensure there is good drainage so that you don’t have water pool there. Proper drainage can be achieved by filling the area in with larger rocks first and then dirt, sand and clay to fill in the gaps between the larger stones.

Getting a property ready for building on can be a lot of work. But with the help of those who know what they are doing, you can get it done in a timely manner and be ready for building in no time.
