What Does a Grounds Maintenance Worker Do?

GMCB Ltd • 27 April 2020
First impressions are important for your business, so if you’re lucky enough to own or work in a building with its own grounds, you shouldn’t overlook their upkeep as part of your general business strategy.

Well maintained grounds show any clients or visitors that you care about the details before they even step into the building, but it can be difficult to stay on top of this aspect if you’re busy with the day to day running of the company. Luckily, there are professionals who can do this for you, and commercial grounds maintenance is the best way to keep your land in tiptop condition. A grounds maintenance worker can offer many services, so if you want to find out more, read on to find out more about what they do.

Lawn maintenance
This primarily involves cutting the grass, but could also involve picking up leaves and fallen fruit, clearing general debris or removing weeds. It also includes general care of the lawn, such as watering the grass and feeding the lawn with the right topsoil or fertiliser.

Hedge trimming
Hedge trimming and pruning is important to ensure healthy growth and a grounds maintenance worker will usually carry out formative pruning in winter or early spring. Some hedges will need a further cut two or three times a year to keep them neat and in shape.

Litter picking
Litter strewn everywhere is never a good look, so litter picking is an important part of maintaining your grounds. Ensure there are strategically placed rubbish bins throughout the grounds and keep on top of things with a once over to pick up any stray litter at the end of each day.

Pond maintenance
A pond can really enhance the look of your grounds, but they need proper care to ensure they stay in good condition. Pond maintenance includes removing dead leaves, managing nearby plants, regular cleaning, monitoring and controlling algae growth, removing ice in winter, maintaining the pump and filters and caring for any fish present.
