Commercial Grass Cutting: When to Cut Your Grass

GMCB Ltd • 30 November 2022

When many of us look out at our garden, cup of tea in hand, and notice the grass looking a little bit shaggy, we think to ourselves ‘that could do with a trim’. Whilst grass cutting may be as simple as this for some people, there are some things you should consider before deciding to cut your lawn - especially when you have extensive land that is no mean feat to maintain.

If you own a private or commercial property with a large amount of land, you could benefit from professional grounds maintenance to keep this looking tidy all year round. Keep reading to learn when it is best to arrange grass cutting for your grounds.

Throughout the Year

There are certain times throughout the year when mowing is required and certain times it is not. Typically, grass requires mowing between March and October (around once to twice in these specific months), with more frequent mowing in the summer.

When mowing during summer, aim to have your grass cut weekly; too frequent mowing can cause the grass to become too short - turning it yellow and weak from stress and inviting weeds into your lawn, whilst not mowing enough can stunt the density and lusciousness of your lawn, since the tips of each grass blade contain hormones that suppress horizontal growth.

It is important to remember to arrange a final cut for your lawn before winter (late October - early November is best depending on weather conditions and temperature), as this will help to prevent diseases and lower the potential of having snow mould (especially in the north of the UK).

Weather Dependent

Whether or not your lawn can be mown depends on what the weather is doing. Conditions can’t be too wet or too dry; just like Goldilocks’ porridge, they’ve got to be just right.

Look at the forecast to see if rainfall is predicted before arranging your cutting. Mowing wet grass is ill-advised, because gravity will pull the grass blades down due to the weight of the water they have absorbed, rather than leaving them standing straight ready for a trim. This will most likely result in an uneven mow when your grass is then dry again, making it look untidy - the opposite of what you want.

Wet grass also tends to clump together, which can clog up mowers and result in damage (though this is less likely to occur in professional mowers).

On the flipside, if there are many dry spells or longer periods of drought, then the grass should also not be mown. This is because the shorter the grass is, the more water and nutrients it requires in order to regrow, which it simply won’t get in a drought.
